12:00 Jaz Flossberg: Hi Ruby

12:00 errcheck Hicks: Hi Ruby

12:00 errcheck Hicks: pictures?
12:00 Ruby Glitter: So you are still there?
12:01 Ana Herzog: yep
12:01 Ruby Glitter: Cool.
12:01 Ruby Glitter: BTW, Drew just IM'ed me that he'd be about 5 minutes late today.
12:01 Ana Herzog: lobby work ---- and being pink and pinker
12:02 Ana Herzog: i'll be in and out i'm at the pink house and we're burning and downloading....
12:02 Ruby Glitter: OK.
12:02 Pila Mulligan: Ruby, is your ACORN affiliation with the RL ACORN organization?
12:03 Ruby Glitter: So soe topics I have for today are: follow-up on the protest machinima (Rik has a suggestion for how to extend/improve it, with our help), and the Edwards HQ.
12:03 Ruby Glitter: There is an ACORn group in SL. I htink it's pretty unofficial.
12:03 Ruby Glitter: Other topics for the meetup?
12:04 errcheck Hicks: This space
12:04 Ruby Glitter: Ah yes.
12:04 errcheck Hicks: planning events??
12:04 Ruby Glitter: Like organizing new events in the future?
12:04 errcheck Hicks: Yes
12:04 Ruby Glitter: Cool.
12:05 errcheck Hicks: I have some misc stuff i could report on
12:05 Ruby Glitter: Let's start with some more concrete topics and then see what we have time for.
12:05 errcheck Hicks: k by me
12:05 Ruby Glitter: It would laso be great to get a Code Pink update at some point.
12:06 Eucalypta Spijkers: hi all
12:06 Pila Mulligan: hi
12:06 errcheck Hicks: Hi Eucalypta
12:06 Ruby Glitter: Welcome, we're just getting going.
12:06 Ruby Glitter: Let's do a round of introductions.
12:06 Ruby Glitter: Folks please share some about your activism in SL and/or RL.
12:08 Ruby Glitter: Welcome, Drew!
12:08 Ruby Glitter: We're just doing introductions.
12:08 Drew Frobozz: hey folks! sorry I'm late.
12:08 errcheck Hicks: Eric Ahlberg, Venice California, setting up music and video here, checking out other organizations and spaces in SL, discussing strategy, cleaning up noob trash
12:08 Jaz Flossberg: Hi Rena
12:08 Rena Kuu: ???
12:09 Ruby Glitter: Welcoem back, Rena.
12:09 Ruby Glitter: We're sharing introductions
12:09 errcheck Hicks: Everyone can go at once on intros
12:09 Ruby Glitter: Yes. ;-)
12:09 Drew Frobozz: Andrew Hoppin, started RootsCamp w/ Ruby, also run Space CoLab island for NASA, and am organizing the YearlyKos Convention in Second Life.
12:09 Ruby Glitter: I'm Ruby Sinreich, local activist in Chapel Hill, NC, online advocacy consultant at work, and RootsCamp organizer in SL.
12:09 Drew Frobozz: San Francsico, CA
12:10 Ruby Glitter: Others please go ahead. Share as little or as much as you like.
12:10 Rena Kuu: ...
12:10 Rena Kuu: Damn ghetto chairs
12:10 Ruby Glitter: I don't see your hands moving...
12:11 Ruby Glitter: Jaz, Ecalypta, Ana, Anybody, Rena - can you please introduce yourselves?
12:11 Rena Kuu: This is stupid, and it's gonna make me go on a tirade of swear words ---being unable to sit evenly on a perfectly flat even surface
12:11 errcheck Hicks: Hi Rik
12:11 Ruby Glitter: Welcome Rik, we're doing inros.
12:11 Rik Riel: hi yalls
12:11 Jaz Flossberg: Well, let me say something about myself
12:11 Drew Frobozz: Hi Rik
12:12 Jaz Flossberg: I have a connection with the Wayne Township Democratic Party
12:12 Jaz Flossberg: Dupage County Illinois
12:12 Ruby Glitter: Ah, cool.
12:12 Jaz Flossberg: A traditional Repubilcan stronghold.
12:12 Eucalypta Spijkers: brb RL
12:13 Jaz Flossberg: My goal is to make sure there is opposition candidates for every elective position in DuPage County
12:13 errcheck Hicks: right on
12:13 Ruby Glitter: Rik, Rena, Anybody?
12:13 Rik Riel: sorry in an interview at the same time
12:13 Eucalypta Spijkers: back
12:13 Ruby Glitter: Oh, sorry. OK, we'll leave you alone. ;-)
12:14 Rena Kuu: I ain't got anything to say. I'm real young and inexperienced, this is basically just another way for me to wake myself up and be a part of something big. I've got a lot to learn at my age before I can become a major force of change in this world.
12:14 Eucalypta Spijkers: i am from the netherlands
12:14 Ana Herzog: i'm back
12:14 Ruby Glitter: We can skip the comprehensive intros, but I need to let you know that they are useful not just because you don't all know each other but also because we have been visited by right-wingers.
12:14 Ruby Glitter: I want to foster an environment of trust here...
12:15 Eucalypta Spijkers: i am working for the labour union
12:15 Ana Herzog: so i'm not alone
12:15 Ana Herzog: i've been imed and harassed by right wingers
12:16 Ruby Glitter: They haven't harrassed me yet, but they have joined our group and tried to attend our meetings.
12:16 Ruby Glitter: So, today's proposed topics: extended machinima version of the march, JRe in SL, this space, other updates as time allows.
12:16 errcheck Hicks: Solidad has been collecting information and doing backgrounds on some of the right wingers
12:16 Ruby Glitter: Is that order good? Other topics?
12:16 Ana Herzog: do they always use the same avatar names
12:17 Rena Kuu: I've got nothing to contribute. Is there a reason for me to be here?
12:17 Ruby Glitter: teh one who joined us is open about his SL identity.
12:17 Ruby Glitter: Rena, just solidarity if you want. You might hear about somethign cool you can work on. I won't be insulted if you leave, though.
12:17 Jaz Flossberg: Stick around Rena.
12:17 Rena Kuu: Jaz, why are you a female?
12:18 Jaz Flossberg: What!
12:18 Rik Riel: (sorry back)
12:18 Rena Kuu: You got the default chop shop female body on
12:18 Jaz Flossberg: omg
12:18 Drew Frobozz: Also re: agenda would be nice to recap all the recent SL Politics activity...
12:18 Ruby Glitter: OK, good Drew.
12:18 Ruby Glitter: Rena, perhaps you caould take that conversation to IM? or later?
12:19 Ruby Glitter: Whatev! ;-)
12:19 Ruby Glitter: Rik, is this a good time to talk about the machinima? We could do that wuickly and get it out of the way.
12:19 Rik Riel: sure thing. Should I distribute the notes I put together?
12:20 Ruby Glitter: yes, please.
12:20 Rik Riel: ok, will do right after this.
12:20 Ruby Glitter: OK.
12:20 Rik Riel: unless Ruby or Drew wants to do that
12:20 Rik Riel: while I describe the basic idea
12:20 Ruby Glitter: Basically folks, we discussed last week making a longer version of the excellent video Rik made of the protest. Something that talk more about why this matters, what the purpose is.
12:20 Ruby Glitter: Er, sorry. was already typing.
12:21 Ruby Glitter: I will share it while you talk.
12:21 Rik Riel: So I have done a basic timeline of what a 5 min video
12:21 Rik Riel: the idea is for several (4-8) residents to drop me a quote as an MP3 of why they think its important to engage politically using SL
12:22 Rik Riel: this will be spliced together with footage from the protest to show the value of thse kinds of virtual spaces for political engagement
12:22 errcheck Hicks accepted your inventory offer.
12:22 Drew Frobozz accepted your inventory offer.
12:22 Rik Riel: it will be punchy and fun
12:22 Eucalypta Spijkers accepted your inventory offer.
12:22 Anybody Acronym accepted your inventory offer.
12:22 Jaz Flossberg accepted your inventory offer.
12:22 Rik Riel: and ahve funky music
12:22 Rik Riel accepted your inventory offer.
12:22 Rik Riel: I'd like Ruby and Drew to sandwich the video with their own thoughts / perspectives
12:23 Pila Mulligan: sorry to disappear earlier -- big crash
12:23 Rik Riel: it will be a basic outreach tool for newbies
12:23 Rik Riel: my last video was VERY viral with 50,000+ views
12:23 Ruby Glitter: NP, Pila. We are discussing making a longer machinima about our protest.
12:23 Ruby Glitter: Amazing.
12:23 Pila Mulligan accepted your inventory offer.
12:24 Rik Riel: this will not likely be as successful
12:24 Drew Frobozz: how did you publicize it Rik?
12:24 Rik Riel: just spammed a lot of blogs and news sites
12:24 Drew Frobozz: 50,000 views from a website I presume... how about within SL? did you stream it here?
12:24 Rik Riel: nope
12:24 errcheck Hicks: and got wonkette and truthdig
12:25 Rik Riel: wonkette threw it over the top
12:25 Rik Riel: we won't be so lucky next time
12:25 Drew Frobozz: what was the topic for that one?
12:25 Ruby Glitter: probably not, but the new edit might appeal more to non SL residents.
12:25 Rik Riel: just a 2 min video of the protest
12:25 errcheck Hicks: great music
12:26 Rik Riel: yeah
12:26 Ruby Glitter: If you press the play button it will sho wup on the big screen here.
12:26 Rik Riel: also it will be good to have for RW media asking about us
12:26 Rik Riel: ah sweet
12:26 Ruby Glitter: Everybody please watch it now if you haven't seen it!
12:27 Eucalypta Spijkers: there is a lot of attention in the media in the netherlands for SL
12:27 Eucalypta Spijkers: but only for the sex and fun things
12:27 Rik Riel: Neat. I know there were those Dutch parliamentarians who visited the Amsterdam sim.
12:27 errcheck Hicks: that sim is so lagged
12:28 Rik Riel: so to make this happen I need volunteers to send me some quotes
12:28 Ruby Glitter: How about if I send a request
12:28 Ruby Glitter: er, sorry. isfire.
12:28 errcheck Hicks: yes
12:28 Ruby Glitter: misfire!
12:28 Jaz Flossberg: Could you talk a little more about what you want in the quote?
12:29 Ruby Glitter: So we can send a request to our group for peopel who were at the march to send you quotes via notecards.
12:29 Ruby Glitter: Would that be helpful?
12:29 Rik Riel: sure. Something along the lines of why you think SL is a good venue for political action / organizing.
12:29 Rik Riel: Ruby, fer sure.
12:29 Rik Riel: I'll write up the appeal and you can edit.
12:29 Ruby Glitter: Yes, I think we want peopel to talk about what the experience of participatig was like for them, WHY they participated, stuff like that.
12:30 Jaz Flossberg: ic
12:30 Ruby Glitter: Is everyone OK with doing this? It is a lot of extra work for Rik and I want to make sure we will all support it and help him however we can.
12:30 Rik Riel: and we would like to show that there are RW activists and concerned citizens who are coming together in SL
12:30 errcheck Hicks: I will send you mp3 rik, next week
12:30 Rik Riel: I.e. Joe Blow, labor organizer from Detroit, known as Joe Avatar in SL
12:30 Ruby Glitter: the point is to show that thi is also grassroots organizing and has the same effect, ie: bringing peopel together, empowering them by putting their voices together.
12:31 Drew Frobozz: I'm very psyched about it. It will, I have no doubt, spawn a lot of good new activism activity in-world.
12:31 Rik Riel: you can reveal as little or as much of your real name and place as you like
12:31 Rik Riel: ideally at least the town you live in
12:31 Rik Riel: Red States welcome!
12:31 Ruby Glitter: w00t, go NC! ;-)
12:32 Ruby Glitter: we're actually light pink, tho.
12:32 Ruby Glitter: anyway, we have a bunch of other good topics to get to, so let's wrap this one up. Any other questions, suggestions, or concerns?
12:32 Rik Riel: also they can't be too long, since I want to have them in print as well as in audio
12:32 errcheck Hicks: I could use the URL to Sara's article
12:33 Ruby Glitter: next steps: Rik will draft an appeal and I (or someone) will send it to the group.
12:33 Rik Riel: for people whose mother tongue isn't english
12:33 Ruby Glitter: I don't see any hand moving, so I'll that as a "no."
12:33 Rik Riel: thanks all
12:34 Eucalypta Spijkers: it could be usefull
12:34 Ruby Glitter: Thank YOU, Rik!
12:34 Ruby Glitter: Let's move on to recent political activiy in SL. Do you want to kick that off, Drew?
12:34 Drew Frobozz: fantastic Rik
12:34 Drew Frobozz: sure, though I'm sure I don't know about it all
12:34 Ruby Glitter: We'll all add bits. ;-)
12:35 Drew Frobozz: Jose Rote, who participated in our early RootsCamps right after the election, made a splash yesterday by launching an unofficial presence for John Edwards' Presidential campaign here yesterday
12:35 Drew Frobozz: it's unofficial, but also supported by the campaign.
12:35 Ruby Glitter: He says he is in touch with the campign, so I'm calling it "semi-official" ;-)
12:35 Rik Riel: and he's already been lambasted by wonkette
12:35 Ruby Glitter: yes.
12:35 Drew Frobozz: not financially, but they're supportive, I mean
12:35 Ana Herzog: isn't everything here unofficial
12:36 Rik Riel: Gov Warner was official
12:36 Drew Frobozz: well, the Mark Warner event was paid for by his PAC
12:36 Drew Frobozz: y
12:36 Drew Frobozz: There are 17 people in an Obama group now
12:36 Drew Frobozz: not too impressive but I'm sure we'll see something major there soon
12:37 Drew Frobozz: and Trellonistas are building an unofficial Wes Clark info and meetup booth across this island here in anticipation of him announcing he's running
12:37 Drew Frobozz: go check it out after the meeting
12:37 errcheck Hicks: In Kenzo and Riversong Garden did a series of art and social issue events and exhibits on some NMC islands, Camp Darfur, CARE, and others, this week
12:38 Ruby Glitter: Hang on, errcheck. Let's finish the candidates first.
12:38 Drew Frobozz: meanwhile, the YearlyKos convention in SL is coming along fantastically behind the scenes. Much much more on that in the coming weeks. Hope to have all the Presidential candidates in-world there "live" from the convention in August.
12:38 Drew Frobozz: by then my guess is they'll all have a significant presence of their own in-world, and active volunteer groups numbering in the 100s of avatars each.
12:38 Ruby Glitter: How will the RL participants see/experience the SL part?
12:39 Drew Frobozz: can't wait to see avatars face-off with signs at joint events, RL debates streaming in-world, etc.
12:39 Drew Frobozz: for YKSL?
12:40 Ruby Glitter: I am not convinced that all the candidates will have presences here in this cycle. but it will be interesting...
12:40 Ruby Glitter: yes.
12:40 Drew Frobozz: there will be multiple modes-- SL-only panels streamed to Chicago, Chicago keynote speeches streamed into SL, and mixed reality panels with content going both ways.
12:40 Ruby Glitter: neat.
12:40 Drew Frobozz: I'm not certain either Ruby... but I think it's v. possible.
12:40 Ana Herzog: there is no one way communication
12:40 Ruby Glitter: OK, other stuff?
12:41 Ruby Glitter: errcheck, talk about the NMC events.
12:41 errcheck Hicks: The SLLU, had a splinter into SLLA, and both have continued to protest the National Front of France. All French Presidential candidates have offices here, election in about 9 weeks.
12:41 Ruby Glitter: Wow.
12:41 errcheck Hicks: i dont wann have to retype that
12:41 Ruby Glitter: France in the hizouse!
12:41 Rik Riel: its fucking unbelievable over there
12:42 Ruby Glitter: re NMC, errcheck said "In Kenzo and Riversong Garden did a series of art and social issue events and exhibits on some NMC islands, Camp Darfur, CARE, and others, this week"
12:42 Ruby Glitter: I attended one of their events. I had sort of mixed impressions.
12:42 errcheck Hicks: OK NMC events were interesting, but perhaps no so concrete in organizing
12:42 Rik Riel: oooo dish!
12:42 Ruby Glitter: They had thids long talk which ended with a request peopel to write ideas on notecards and put them somewhere on Better World island.
12:42 Ruby Glitter: I just wasn't sure what the point was.
12:42 Ruby Glitter: And it didn't seem connected ot anything else.
12:43 Rik Riel: hmmm that doesn't sound like In Kenzo
12:43 Ruby Glitter: Also they were wearing shirts that said "humanity before politics".
12:43 errcheck Hicks: There are many symbolic acts/ceremonies here and I am OK with that
12:44 Ruby Glitter: True,
12:44 Ana Herzog: why peeve?
12:44 Ana Herzog: this is iconicity city
12:44 Ruby Glitter: because I think sometimes think politics is some entity in a vacuum when in fact, it's how governments act collectively to solve communal problems.
12:44 errcheck Hicks: Even the SLLU is struggleing with defining it's political platform and what effective actions can be mad in SL
12:44 Ana Herzog: it is one of the ways
12:45 Ruby Glitter: politics isn't bad. it's a vehicle.
12:45 Ana Herzog: not the only way
12:45 Ruby Glitter: certainly not the only way.
12:45 Rik Riel: BTW IN Kenzo's video on darfur is the shiznit: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1156309363278144913&hl=en
12:45 Ruby Glitter: but stuf fliek that slogan may turn peopel away from engagement in their government, and those are just the peopel i want to BE engaged.
12:45 errcheck Hicks: I have ultimate respect for In
12:45 Ruby Glitter: Cool.
12:46 Ruby Glitter: I don't want to be all negative. tyey are doign great stuff!
12:46 Ruby Glitter: I just didn't know what to think about the event.
12:46 errcheck Hicks: It seemed to head toward brainstorming
12:47 Drew Frobozz: Interesting that we're now seeing a distinction between "doing stuff" and doing stuff really effectively in SL.
12:47 Drew Frobozz: wonder if that's going to show up in objective metrics
12:47 Drew Frobozz: group size, attendance at follow-up events
12:47 Drew Frobozz: RW media hits generated, etc.
12:47 Ana Herzog: if you anal in rl you will be anal in sl
12:48 Ruby Glitter: hmm. ;-)
12:48 errcheck Hicks: I see this placde as one big movie set and photo op
12:48 errcheck Hicks: place
12:48 Eucalypta Spijkers: do you want people from other countrys to join , or is it mostly a US matter ?
12:48 errcheck Hicks: I am very internationalist
12:48 Ruby Glitter: Both, Eucalypta.
12:49 Drew Frobozz: global please! :)
12:49 Drew Frobozz: we're need non-US people involved in US politics in my opinion, and vice-versa
12:49 Ruby Glitter: Some advocacy is focusedon teh US, but we get a lot out of workign globally too.
12:49 Pila Mulligan: fine
12:49 Pila Mulligan: thanks
12:49 Pila Mulligan: oops, 'ecuse
12:49 Drew Frobozz: and personally I'm extremely interested in the work of international advocacy groups.
12:49 errcheck Hicks: I have already learned that we can make a difference on international issues with the antifn stuff
12:49 errcheck Hicks: And many social issues groups focus is international
12:50 errcheck Hicks: There was an World Stock exchange meeting this week, with anti-WTO protesters, but the meeting was too boring and lame to protest much
12:51 Ruby Glitter: Hmm.
12:51 Ruby Glitter: Other recent activism, advocacy, or organzing in SL?
12:51 Ana Herzog: who was doing the meeting?
12:51 Ana Herzog: those guys aren't in sl are they?
12:51 errcheck Hicks: WSE is an SL stock exchange
12:51 Ana Herzog: lol
12:51 Ruby Glitter: Oh.
12:52 Ruby Glitter: I hadn't heard of it.
12:52 Eucalypta Spijkers: i heard of it
12:52 errcheck Hicks: Their speaker started by apologising for a broken trading system
12:52 errcheck Hicks: and then recited the credentials of those assigned to fix it
12:52 errcheck Hicks: I thought it must be a spoof
12:52 Ana Herzog: lmao
12:53 Rik Riel: There's an academic conference coming up on Feb 24
12:53 Rik Riel: "beyond broadcast" looking at civil society, politics in the YouTube era
12:53 Ana Herzog: what is it
12:53 Rik Riel: There's a Second Life component to it as well
12:53 Rik Riel: www.beyondbroadcast.net
12:53 Ruby Glitter: I met the guys organizing Beyond Broadcast.
12:53 Ana Herzog: is anyone allowed in to the sl audience?
12:53 Ruby Glitter: What are they doing with SL?
12:54 Rik Riel: yes its public
12:54 errcheck Hicks: I went to an Iraq war discussion at umm, where is that landmark
12:54 Rik Riel: webcasting the event, holding in-world workshops
12:54 Rik Riel: berkman island
12:54 Ruby Glitter: Ah, cool.
12:54 Ruby Glitter: Send us info if you have any.
12:54 Rik Riel: I'll likely be there, either in person or in avatar
12:56 Ruby Glitter: OK, we onn;y have 5 minutes left.
12:56 Ruby Glitter: er, onLy
12:56 Ruby Glitter: We wantt o talk more in-depth about how to use this space sometime. We coudl brainstorm right now, or just save it for later.
12:56 Eucalypta Spijkers: there is a SL news paper you could write in it?
12:57 errcheck Hicks: I want to set up a wall, opposite us here, which will contain links to progressive RL orgs, and our members disgression
12:57 Rik Riel: whats the deal wit hprim limits now?
12:57 Ana Herzog: I love the random info element here
12:57 Ruby Glitter: Good question. I have hit the limit when trying to make stuff here before.
12:57 errcheck Hicks: 83/117 on this lot
12:57 Ruby Glitter: Drew?
12:58 Ruby Glitter: What does that mean, errcheck?
12:58 Rik Riel: it means were almost maxed out?
12:58 Ana Herzog: how many parcels are there
12:58 errcheck Hicks: we can't add much on this lot, but that can be OK
12:58 Drew Frobozz: if we're up against any constraints that we really need to push through, let me know and I'll try to get it done, but I'm not really in favor of clutter anyway
12:58 errcheck Hicks: I think leaving that much headroom is goo
12:58 errcheck Hicks: good
12:59 Ana Herzog: minimalistic
12:59 Ana Herzog: gotta run
12:59 Drew Frobozz: I have to go run another meeting, but do IM me with any issues along these lines.
12:59 errcheck Hicks: I have the property hooked up with the video and music now
12:59 Drew Frobozz: also, can someone post the transcript of today to RootsCampSL.org?
12:59 Ana Herzog: will be back for real soon.....
13:00 Ruby Glitter: I'll post the transcript.
13:00 Ruby Glitter: I've been keeping up with them.
13:00 Drew Frobozz: thanks! :)
13:00 Ruby Glitter: I think.
13:00 Drew Frobozz: bye all!
13:00 Ruby Glitter: Oh, it looks liek I am a week behind. http://rootscamp.pbwiki.com/RootsCampSLminutes
13:00 Eucalypta Spijkers: bye
13:00 Jaz Flossberg: Bye Drew
13:00 Rik Riel: bye drew
13:01 Ruby Glitter: OK, thanks for coming everyone.
13:01 Rik Riel: thanks ruby
13:01 Rik Riel: will get you a notecard when I can
13:01 Jaz Flossberg: Thnx Ruby, Bye everyone
13:01 errcheck Hicks: I want to start some live events here, but slowly at first until I get the technical stuff worked out, and probably starting with speakers
13:01 Ruby Glitter: Great.
13:01 Ana Herzog: thanks.
13:01 Ana Herzog: did i misss anything we are supposed to do?
13:01 Rik Riel: start thinking of a quote to record and send to me!
13:02 Ana Herzog: on what?
13:02 Rik Riel: on SL as a platform for political change
13:02 Rik Riel: ruby will send out a notecard on it
13:03 Ana Herzog: cool
13:03 Rik Riel: btw I don't want to get anyone's hopes up
13:04 Rik Riel: this will not be as good as the stuff that In Kenzo or Ill Clan does
13:04 Rik Riel: or Moo
13:04 Ruby Glitter: I'm sure it will be great.
13:04 Ruby Glitter: Look how successful your last one was!
13:04 Pila Mulligan: sorry to be only half here for a while (phone call)
13:04 Rik Riel: gotta roll
13:05 Ruby Glitter: That's OK. I also need to run.
13:05 Ruby Glitter: I'll stay in world while I post the notes, etc.
13:05 errcheck Hicks: Another RWer to look out for is Lotus Brooks
13:06 errcheck Hicks: Ana, do you have the names of your harassers
